Premiere: "The Slave Routes: A Global Vision"
International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

Geneva, 26 November 2008. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) invited all Permanent Missions to commemorate the International Day against Slavery – a joint OHCHR – UNESCO initiative – on 2 December 2008. The OHCHR hosted the premiere of a new documentary, “The Slave Routes: A Global Vision.”

The OHCHR through the Preparatory Committee of the Durban Review Conference has initiated a worldwide information campaign to mobilise support for the objectives of the Durban Review Conference. The documentary was designed in accordance with the objectives of the Durban Review Conference.

The pre-screening of this film presented the histories and diverse heritages stemming from the global phenomenon of African enslavement and provides an overview of African displacements through slavery. It captures the struggles and trauma faced by slavery and attempts to remind its audience of the power of grassroots organization and global humanitarianism. As the film progresses, it demonstrates how African slaves and their descendants helped shape the modern world.
