Launching of the 2018 LL.M in Transnational Crime and Justice
Turin, Italy, 12 February 2018. The new edition of the Master of Laws in Transnational Crime and Justice (LL.M) will be presented on 12 February 2018 at the UN Campus in Turin.
The ceremony will be opened at 3 pm by the Mayor of the City of Turin Chiara Appendino. After her brief introduction, special interventions will also be made by: Jafar Javan, Acting Director of UNICRI; Mihir Kanade, Director of the Human Rights Centre at University for Peace (UPEACE); Cristina Lucchini, Judge of the Tribunal of Turin; Armando Spataro, Chief of the Office of the Prosecutor of Turin; Elena Appendino, Councilor of the Turin’s Bar Association; and Mary Kaldor, Professor of Global Governance and Director of the Conflict and Civil Society Research Unit at the London School of Economics.
The 2018 edition of the ten-year lasting Master’s of UNICRI has been renewed to better reflect the current international community priorities. This new programme is organised in partnership with University for Peace (UPEACE), a Treaty Organization established in 1980 by the United Nations General Assembly and located in Costa Rica.
The LL.M., lasting six months (February – July), focuses on issues relating to peace and conflicts and is designed for professionals and university graduates wishing to specialize in the fields of humanitarian law, international criminal law and procedure, international human rights law, international law dimensions of peace and conflicts, transnational crimes and transitional justice.
The academic curriculum is composed by two phases. The residential phase comprises theoretical lectures, seminars and practical exercises (including mock trials, Moot courts) and other activities organized in cooperation with international organizations, NGOs, research institutions and entities belonging to the UN system.
During the second phase, students will produce a research paper or a project proposal linked to the content of the programme. The LL.M. will officially finish with the Graduation Ceremony, to be held in Turin on July 20, 2018.
The group of participants is composed by 37 students from the five continents, namely Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, the Americas and Africa.
The LL.M sets as its core objective the education and training of new generations on priority issues that, beyond a highly specialized knowledge and expertise, require above all a comprehensive vision of international scenarios and the capacity to address and cope with today’s major challenges.
This excellence programme includes in its Faculty international renowned experts from major organisations involved in all subject matters of the LL.M. The opening ceremony will end with Mary Kaldor’s keynote speech on second generation human security, a new approach to today’s major global security challenges, which focuses on human rights, the protection of people, multilateral action and legitimate authority as powerful and essential tools in addressing emerging conflicts and crisis.
