Sixteenth Regional Round Table for the African Atlantic Façade

The Sixteenth Regional Round Table for the African Atlantic Façade, organized within the framework of the European Union (EU) Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centers of Excellence (CoE) Initiative, was held in Casablanca, Morocco, on 3 and 4 December.
Organized by the Regional Secretariat based in Rabat, the roundtable was an important opportunity for National Focal Points from the region to share their experiences, learn about the progress of national activities related to CBRN risk mitigation and define priority actions for the year 2020.
In their opening remarks, Mr. Mohamed Salami, Director of the Regional Secretariat for the African Atlantic Façade, and Mr. Balazs Maar, Programme manager at the European Union, congratulated the National Focal Points for their efforts to strengthen CBRN risk mitigation in the region.
The round table hosted national focal points representing Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Liberia, Morocco, Sierra Leone and Togo, as well as the European Union, UNICRI, and project implementers in the region.
With Mr. Salami coordinating discussions, the meeting achieved the goal of effectively preparing for the implementation of future activities and projects aimed at strengthening national capacities to enable CBRN risk mitigation.
Context
The European Union (EU) Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centers of Excellence (CoE) Initiative is funded and implemented through the Stability and Peace (IcSP), the EU's main instrument for international cooperation supporting security initiatives and peace-building activities in partner countries. The initiative is led by the Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) of the European Commission, in close coordination with the European External Action Service (EEAS). The Joint Research Center of the European Commission (JRC) provides partner countries with the necessary technical support, while the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) ensures the coherence and effectiveness of cooperation with Member States at the national, regional and international levels. Other international and/or regional organizations as well as experts also contribute to the initiative. The initiative has sixty-one partner countries in eight regions of the world and is the largest external civil security program in the EU.
