 TITLE
MERCHANTS OF MADNESS: THE METHAMPHETAMINE EXPLOSION IN THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE
 ABSTRACT
This book is about the production of and trade in methamphetamine in the Southeast Asian “Golden Triangle”, where Burma, Laos and Thailand intersect. Since long infamous for its opium (and through it heroin) production, this region has since the 1990s also become the site for an enormous production of the synthetic drug methamphetamine, known in Thailand as the “madness drug”, which, among other serious consequences, often produces an aggressive effect leading to violent crimes. || The book explores how the production of and trade in this drug came about and who the persons behind them are. It argues that the underlying reasons are ethnic and political divisions in Burma and that these have to be solved in order to stop the drug trade.
